Your Rights
As a resident of D.C. living in a private residence, you have rights that protect you as a tenant.
If you have any questions or concerns about your rights, or if you need assistance regarding your landlord, please don't hesitate to contact the Office of Off Campus Student Life on the 3rd floor of Leavey, or by calling 687-3428.
The D.C. government has issued a helpful and informative Tenant's Guide to Safe and Decent Housing, available on the D.C. government website in PDF format. Its focus is to assist tenants with issues and concerns about private residential rental housing. A number of topics covered in this guide are relevant to student renters, including:
- Security deposits
- Landlord's responsibility to maintain the rental unit
- Filing a complaint about housing conditions
- Contact information for D.C. housing services
If you cannot view or print this guide online, copies are available in the OSCL office.
